Do we overestimate progress in the short-term?
And underestimate progress in the long-term?
I liked this take on autonomous vehicles and how technology progresses. John Carmack believes we will have self-driving cars by 2030. In general he says we overestimate the potential of technology in the short-term and underestimate it in the long-term. The first half of this sounds right in relation to self-driving technology; it will be interesting to see if the second part hold up.

I've heard this before, and agree with it. However, often the future as predicted is like this: https://www.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=https%3A%2F%2Fi.pinimg.com%2F564x%2F26%2F80%2F90%2F268090d6adf5ab8f303dcb8d25611797--things-to-come-future-city.jpg&imgrefurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pinterest.com%2Fpin%2F296745062919012649%2F&tbnid=zsv17ini3vjNPM&vet=12ahUKEwiy2ef06LT5AhUVn3IEHb_lCRsQMygCegUIARDDAQ..i&docid=EAh7ltQdbw3RjM&w=482&h=640&q=Things%20to%20come%20future%20city&client=safari&ved=2ahUKEwiy2ef06LT5AhUVn3IEHb_lCRsQMygCegUIARDDAQ
... and when it arrives, is more like this:
